Dog Fighting

July 2016

Dog fighting is barbaric and I am pleased that it has been illegal for over a century.

Police have the power to investigate and arrest anyone suspected of involvement. People can be charged with causing, taking part in, attending or publicising an animal fight, receiving admission money or keeping equipment, premises or an animal to be used in a fight.

Participation in dog fighting is currently punishable by up to 6 months in prison and/or an unlimited fine. Further, the Ministry of Justice is currently looking at whether there is a case for increasing penalties further. Owning and selling some types of dogs for fighting is also, rightly, illegal.

Please be aware that as a Member of the Government I am not permitted to sign Early Day Motions, including EDM 64 on Organised Dog Fighting.
