Nature Directives

May 2016

The European Commission is reviewing EU Nature Directives (on birds and habitats) to make sure that they’re fit for purpose. Clearly it’s important that they work effectively.

As part of this process the Commission consults with interest groups in each EU member state. Here in the UK they are consulting the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Department for Energy and Climate Change, and the RSPB. A public consultation was also run on the European Commission website.

During the last Government the way in which these Directives are implemented in England was reviewed. Government found that they are broadly working well, but found 28 measures that would make compliance with them simpler. Most of these measures have now been introduced and the remainder are being implemented.
