The Chief Medical Officer has warned that we are facing perhaps our most serious moment yet in the battle against coronavirus and has called on the British public to play their part by continuing to stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives.
No one wanted to see these further restrictions imposed, but the speed with which this new variant is spreading is both frustrating and alarming.
I have spoken with leaders from our local health services about the huge pressure that rising infection rates are putting on the NHS. They are doing fantastic work, but it is clear that we must do all we can to tackle the new variant of this horrible virus.
This week, the Government published the Covid-19 UK Vaccines Delivery Plan, setting out the delivery of the biggest vaccination programme in British history. Locally, it is fantastic to see Primary Care Networks begin delivering the vaccines to care home residents and GP surgeries.
There is still more to do here, and I will be working with colleagues locally, and nationally, to support the vaccine rollout. There will be challenging days ahead, but I know our community will get through it and come out stronger.
